Lot Essay
Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618) the English courtier, navigator and poet. He became a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I who heaped favours upon him. From 1584-1589 he sent an expedition to America. He later successfully introduced tobacco and potatoes to Britain. In 1595 along with five ships he explored the coasts of Trinidad and sailed up the Orinoco which he described in The Discovery of Guiana. In 1603 he was arrested. When he was finally released in 1616 he made an expedition to Orinoco in search of gold. The mission failed and he lost his fleet as well as his son. He was beheaded at Whitehall.
