Lot Essay

John Maitland was the grandson of Sir John Maitland (1545?-95) Lord High Chancellor of Scotland. As a Covenanter, he was imprisoned 1651-60; later supported the King, and had great influence over Charles II, who created him Duke of Lauderdale and Marquess of March in 1672.
The original portrait by Samuel Cooper was sold at Christie's on 21st February 1961, lot 88, and is now in the National Portrait Gallery.
