Lot Essay

Charles James Fox (1749-1806) was a Liberal statesman born in London and educated at Eton and Hertford College, Oxford. He was addicted to gambling and drinking. Edmund Burke called him 'the greatest debater the world ever saw' and he was very generous to his opponents.
