Each well potted with rounded sides and an everted rim, finely painted in underglaze-red of rich pink tones with faint green speckling, centred on the interior with a medallion of a phoenix with wings outspread and tail plumes fluttering, the exterior with five matching medallions

A pair of Qianlong bowls with this design from the Edward T. Chow Collection, was sold in Hong Kong, 25 November 1980, lot 121. Compare also with the Kangxi prototype, included in the National Palace Museum, Taibei, Special Exhibition of K'ang-hsi, Yung-cheng and Ch'ien Lung Wares, 1986, Catalogue, no. 7, together with another bowl with dragon medallions.
