A RARE CINNABAR LACQUER 'DRAGON' BOX AND COVER
QIANLONG

Of rectangular form with bevelled corners, the top surface of the cover is elaborately carved with an ascending full-faced five-clawed dragon, its scaly body encircling a flaming pearl, flanked by two descending dragons, amidst turbulent waves framed within a diaper border, the sides with rolling waves, the interior and base lacquered black (minor losses and repairs)
10 in. (25.4 cm.) wide

Lot Essay

Compare the carving on this box with the Imperial portable tea-ceremony chest carved with similar dragons on a wave ground, sold in these Rooms, 26 April 1998, lot 565; both appear to have been made in the same workshop.

(US$26,000-40,000)
