Of rectangular section with canted corners, the black lacquer surface delicately inlaid in mother-of-pearl of iridescent tones with figures in landscapes on two sides, hibiscus growing from rockwork on another and a pair of dragons encircling a shou symbol on the spouted side, the top surface, neck, spout, arched handle and cover densely decorated with floral sprays, scrolls and geometric motifs, age cracks

Lot Essay

Compare the present wine-pot to that illustrated by S. Jenyns and W. Watson, Chinese Art, The Minor Arts, 1963, no. 49, where the authors point out that the form of the teapot, with tall body and handle, is typical of the Kangxi period, when it was also made in famille verte porcelain.
