Lot Essay

Similar to a drawing by Matham sold in these Rooms, 24 November 1992, lot 130, illustrated.
Matham's engraving of the Madonna with the Child on a cushion on her lap (B.110, Hollstein XI, 118) shows the Infant Christ in a similar position. The present sheet also recalls similar loosely realized studies of seated women made by Matham's master Hendrick Goltzius, E. K. J. Reznicek, Drawings Rediscovered 1962-1992, supplement to Die Zeichnungen von Hendrick Goltzius, Utrecht, 1961, cf. pp. 79 and 84, K436a and K447b, illustrated.
