Lot Essay

While the initials 'B.B.' clearly refer to Bartholomeus Breenbergh, the handling of this drawing may be compared to that in the only known Roman view by Lastman sold in these Rooms, 12 November 1990, lot 5, which was signed and dated 1606. Lastman travelled to Rome in 1603 and Karel van Mander mentions that he was still there in the next year. The handling of this sheet may also be compared to that of Jan Pynas.
