Similar in format and handling to two studies of Het Loo in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam (N. Wedde, Isaac de Moucheron (1667-1744), His Life and Works..., Frankfurt am Main, 1996, I, pp. 247-8, nos. D59 and D60, II, plates 34-35). De Moucheron also executed a drawn and painted bird's-eye views of Het Loo, both now preserved there. The painted version is dated 1698 or 1699 (Wedde, op.cit., p. 246, no. D57 and p. 26). A larger drawn version is preserved at the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague (Wedde D 58). Moucheron's view of the Cijferfontein in the gardens of Het Loo is in the Albertina and the painted version is at Het Loo (Wedde D 61 and p. 25).
Het Loo Palace was the favourite summer residence of the Stadholders and the Royal Family of the Netherlands from 1686 onwards. In the 19th Century the gardens were remodelled following the fashion for English gardening. In 1984 the palace and its gardens were extensively restored returning them to the 17th Century state.
