Cornelis Ploos van Amstel is known for his highly important art collection, including pictures, prints, sculpture, coins and medals, scientific instruments, books and manuscripts, but especially the large number of Dutch Old Master Drawings. The present book includes a number of his prints after original drawings, most from his own collection. These 'prenttekeningen' were done in a technique which he developed himself, mistaken by many to the present day for originals. The first prints were published in 1765, and were expensive: the violinplayer after Adriaen van Ostade cost 15 guilders and 15 stuivers. The first editions included 46 prints for 227 guilders. Some years after his death, Ploos' etching plates were acquired by Christiaan Josi (1768-1828), who had known Ploos in his last years. Josi first worked with the famous English reproductive printmaker John Raphael Smith in London, where he settled in 1819. In 1821 Josi continued the publication of Ploos' prints in an edition of only 100 copies, adding to it 55 prints by others, including Cornelis Brouwer and himself. The total number of prints for the present edition was not 100 as described, but 104. The present set includes Josi's certificate of that limited number, dated 1827, one year before Josi's death. All prints bear the coat-of-arms of Ploos on the reverse although he had not been involved in the production. It is interesting to note that the set includes prints after the 18th Century artists Jacob Cats and Dirk Langendijk. The print after Cats is a lithograph, a relatively new technique at the time.
