It was on the outward journey to India that Edwin Lutyens created his plans for a new Gledstone Hall in Yorkshire with his client Sir Amos Nelson.
Work was not completed until 1926 but the results were universally admired. The black and white marbled hall and staircase were singled out for especial praise, as his ultimate conception of a classical interior.
Their simplicity was mirrored in the hanging lights which added to the lightness but did not detract either from the 'healthy' austerity or the clarity of design.
An example of this light is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
