Lot Essay

The present bookcase was designed by Henry van de Velde for the interior of the home of Frau Else von Guaita in Sonnleiten, Bergen.
Frau von Guaita worked as a bookbinder at Van de Velde's Kunstgewerbeschule in Weimar.
After her death, the bookcase passed to her neighbour, Rudolph
Borchardt, from whom the piece was purchased by the present owner in 1968.
