Johann Daniel Reitter (1759-1811) & Gottlieb Friedrich Abel.
100 hand-coloured engraved plates, many heightened with gum arabic, by G.F. Abel. (Occasional light browing.) Contemporary calf, spine gilt, cream glazed-paper lettering-piece (some scuffing to spine and extremities, corners rubbed).
FIRST EDITION, with a selection of excellent plates of forest trees and shrubs by Abel (b.1763). The basic text provides a key to the plates, which are titled beneath each subject with their Latin binomial and the common name in German. The presentation of the plates is unusual in the use of shadows which are employed to lift the samples from the page and further the illusion of reality.
Reitter, a botanist and forester was the Würtemberg 'Hofjäger' from 1780-1793 and also taught forestry at Hohenheim. He was a forestry commissioner at Stuttgart from 1794-1801 and with the Würtemberger forestry department from 1803-1811. Nissen BBI 1617; Pritzel 7533; Stafleu and Cowan 8971.
