The Birds of Europe. London: Richard and John E. Taylor for the author, [1832]-1837. 5 volumes, large 2° (547 x 360mm). 401 hand-coloured lithographic plates only (of 448) by John Gould after Edward Lear and others, printed by Charles Hullmandel. (Some light spotting and offsetting, the 'Tawny Owl' plate in vol. I affected by clean 120mm. tear, occasional light soiling.) Contemporary half calf, gilt edges (rubbed and scuffed).

Edward Lear contributed a number of plates to the work, and was not only the first but the most gifted of the fine series of artists that Gould was to employ over the next fifty years. This copy contains 42 of 50 plates in volume I, 94 of 99 plates in volume II, 83 of 93 plates in volume III, 85 of 103 plates in volume IV, and 97 of 103 plates in volume V.
