La Ménagerie du Muséum national d'Histoire Naturelle, ou les Maréchal… Avec une note descriptive et historique pour chaque animal, par un Naturaliste.. Paris: Baudouin for Miger, Dentu and Grandcher, 'An IX' [1800-1801]. 2° (502 x 330mm). 6 blank leaves. 42 fine engraved plates by Miger after Nicolas Maréchal (36), Léon de Wailly (4), Huet (1) and one unattributed. (Occasional light spotting.) Early-19th century French brown roan-backed marbled boards (light scuffing to extremities).

AN UNRECORDED EARLY ISSUE OF A RARE WORK ON THE MAMMALS AND BIRDS OF THE MUSéUM NATIONAL D'HISTOIRE NATURELLE IN PARIS, issued during one of the great periods of French natural history illustration. As part of a tradition established in the 17th century, the best available natural history artists were employed to make drawings of natural history subjects on vellum, initially for the Royal Library, and later for the Natural History Museum. Nicolas Maréchal (1753-1803), Léon de Wailly (fl.1801-1824) and Nicolas Huet (1770-1830) were all members of the highly talented group of artists, headed by Gerard van Spaendonck (1746-1822), who worked on the 'vélins' during the period of the Republic and the Napoleonic period: with hindsight it is clear that this period produced some of the greatest of all French natural history art. The animal subjects were painted from life at the Paris 'ménagerie' and feature lions, a tiger, a leopard, bears, elephant, a rhino, a zebra, a quagga, antelope, 8 monkeys or lemurs, ostrich, a cassowary, an Egyptian goose and a dolphin. Each plate is accompanied by explanatory text by Cuvier or Lacépède.

The present copy, an unrecorded variant, is dated 1800 rather than the usual 1801, with a title which makes no mention of Lacépède an Cuvier's contribution, and a single 'Extrait des Registres' leaf rather than a 9pp. introduction by Lacépède, The copy has clearly been bound from the original cahiers (10 according to Brunet). In addition, it includes six blank leaves that would more normally be discarded and the pagination is not continuous. Cf. see Anker 275 (41 plates); BM(NH) IV, p.1517; Brunet III, 725; Nissen ZBI 2353 (calls for 38 plates).
