Loos' design was directly inspired by English and American club chairs of the late 19th century. He was so impressed by what he considered to be the Anglo-Saxon approach to relaxation that he wrote extensively on the subject in his text Das Sitzmöbel in 1898. He was convinced that with the hectic pace of life people were more interested in being able to rest easily and quickly and so he readily adopted the low slung form of chair being retailed in England by firms such as Hampton & Sons.
