Batley was a pupil of Bruce Talbert and designed furniture for Collinson & Lock. A chair of the same design was exhibited by Collinson & Lock on their stand at the Philadelphia Exhibtion of 1876 alongside cabinets by Bruce Talbert and E.W. Godwin (reproduced below).
