Born in Lyon in 1902, Andé Sornay studied at the École des Beaux-Art in Lyon. He abandoned the traditional styles produced in the family workshop and designed furniture from 1919 in simple, innovative and Cubist forms inspired by the work of friends Francis Jourdain and Pierre Chareau amongst others. 'Le style Sornay' became recognizable for its use of brass nails in decoration.
