Lot Essay

These chairs were fashioned from the massive root of a three to four hundred year old Californian myrtle tree.
They are typical of John Makepeace's endeavour to exploit the visual and structural qualities of wood in the most spontaneous way possible. He presents the pure abstract form of the root and its naturally irregular surface juxtaposed with the smooth rhythmic grain and deep colour of the wood.
