A FAHUA BALUSTER JAR, AND A FAHUA BRUSH AND INK HOLDER
mid ming dynasty
The jar decorated around the body with three flowering branches and butterflies on a dark blue ground, all between lappet bands at the foot and shoulder, the mouth rim fitted with an incised silver band and surmounted by a metal cover, minor glaze frits and cracks, 7½in. (19cm.) high; the squat barrel-shaped brush and ink holder with an incised lotus scroll design on a turquoise ground, minor glaze frits, 5¼.in. (13.5cm.) diam. (2)

Lot Essay

Compare the similar porcelain brush and ink stand from the Grandidier Collection, in the Musée Guimet, Paris, and illustrated in Oriental Ceramics - The World's Great Collections, vol.7, fig.61. A similar aubergine and turquoise-glazed brush and ink stand from the Mottahedeh Collection, but without the lotus scroll decoration, was sold in our New York Rooms, 2 June 1994, lot 282.
