The pair of dishes decorated at the centre with a figure painted in underglaze blue, standing on a swirling cloud and surrounded by leaf-clusters, clouds and the sun, the exterior with two floral sprays, fritting to rims and chips to one foot, the other decorated with a pair of Buddhistic lions and swirling flames in green enamel, all reserved on an iron-red ground, the exterior similarly decorated, enamels rubbed

Lot Essay

Two similar plates were sold in these Rooms, 12 June 1989, lot 307 and 309, from the Peony Pavilion Collection. See also Toji Taikei, vol.45, pl.75, for another example of these rare plates, some of the very few documentary examples of reign marked Tianqi porcelain, and almost certainly made for the export trade with Japan at the time when Imperial commissions to Jingdezhen were dramatically slumping in number.
