BEAN, Roy (1825-1903).
THE RONALD J. ATLAS COLLECTION The majority of the following lots belong to the Ronald J. Atlas manuscript collection of outlaws and lawman of the old West. Some of the rarest and most famous names of the frontier appear on the following pages, and in very desirable forms. Ron took great care in selecting only the finer examples, and in acquiring from reputable sources. Many are wonderfully set in frames, others in protective custom morocco cases. To comment on their rarity in every case quickly becomes redundant. Suffice to say, with very few exceptions all of these manuscripts are rarely encountered. In a number of instances they have never appeared at a major auction, and in a least two cases they are the only examples known.

BEAN, Roy (1825-1903).
American frontiersman and 'judge'.
Document signed three times ("Roy Bean"), partly printed and accomplished in autograph, Vinegaroon, Texas, September 3, 1889. 2 pages recto and verso, a few minor stains, but fine overall. The document is enclosed in a 1/4 red morocco custom case with gilt-lettered spine.
The warrant is State-wide for the arrest of Royal B. Trent "wherein he is charged with assault with intent to kill by firing two shots at Wm Case." Bean fills out the warrant and signs again twice on the verso with the notes that "Executed on September 27, 1899 by Deputy A.J. Forrest by bringing Mr. Trent into court Roy Bean." The frontier legend, and unofficial Justice of the Peace assumed the role of "the law West of the Pecos." He interpreted the law in his own way and held court in his saloon "The Jersey Lilly." He was also famous for his obsession with Lilly Langtry for whom his settlement was renamed.
Provenance: Ronald J. Atlas collection.
