Details
CANTON, Frank (1849-1927).
Born Joe Horner near Richmond Virginia, Frank Canton was one of the most legendary, colorful, and quintessential characters of the old West, counting among his varied professions, cowboy, outlaw, rancher, lawman, packing plant superintendent, gunfighter, prospector, soldier, bank robber.
Document signed ("Frank Canton"), partially printed and accomplished in autograph, 'Territory of Oklahoma', April 3, 1895. 1 page, 8 x 3 in., punched at upper left, very fine.
The document presented is a voucher for payment for care and feeding of a charge which may be "Apa. she. ah", or for that matter "ah Apache", in Canton's arcane hand. "I certify that ... to April 3, 1895 I furnished subsistence for the following United States prisoners in my charge ... As there is hardly a place in the country in which I am on duty where food and lodging can be obtained, it is necessary for me to be prepared at all times to furnish those articles myself, and the rates charged ... are the lowest at which the articles can possibly be furnished. Frank Canton Deputy United States Marshal." Crafty on the trail, pretty much fearless, and real good with a gun, were the meaningful measures of consistency on the frontier. Deputy US Marshal Canton, fills out this paperwork 18 years after being jailed for robbing a bank in Commanche, Texas.
