CLUM, John (1851-1932).
American frontiersman; first mayor of Tombstone.
Document signed ("John P. Clum"), Tombstone, Arizona, August 18, 1881. 1 page quarto, on blue lined paper, being the Oath of Office of Tombstone City Attorney V.A. Gregg, and in his hand. Clum signs very boldly in black above the words Mayor of Tombstone. Handsomely matted and framed with thermoplates, to 22 1/2 x 39 in.
As the former Apache agent who captured Geronimo in Cochise County, Arizona, frontiersman Clum settled in Tombstone in 1880. He founded the local newspaper, was Postmaster, Chairman of the Schoolboard, Captain of the Vigilante Citizen's Safety Committee. He was a backbone of the commuity and a very good friend of the Earps. Clum signs this oath of office just two months before the the events at the O.K. Corral put the wicked little boomtown on the permanent map. Testifying at the Earp's hearing the mayor volunteered "The Earps did their duty, and did it well."
