FREMONT, John Charles (1813-1890).
American explorer, army officer, politician.
Autograph note signed ("J.C. Fremont"), to "Dear Major", no place or date. 1 page octavo, tape remnants on verso.
"I enquired after receiving your card. Mr. Roy called before I was down this morning. I am not well today. I am therefore late." The note appears intended for a Stevens, and an Ian Germain. Quite to the point, this is a clean and attractive example of the hand and signature of one of the great Western explorers and military men. Fremont mapped the Oregon Trail in 1842 and followed up in Colorado, Nevada, and on his third expedition crossed the Rocky Mountains into California. He firgured prominently in conquering California during the Mexican War and became Military governor.
