Details
OAKLEY, Annie (1860-1926).
American markswoman.
Autograph letter signed ("Annie Oakley Butler"), to "Dear Little Lady.", Greensboro, North Carolina, November 17, 1923. 3 pages, octavo, on two leaves of pictorial stationery of the O. Henry Hotel, in very fine condition. Annie Oakley has crossed off the name of the hotel on the first page and written in "357 N. Elm Street" as her current address.
Born Phoebe Anne Oakley Moses, "little Miss sure-shot" toured the vaudeville circuits and circuses with her husband Frank E. Butler also a famous marksman, with whom she later starred in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. "What a wonderful little girl you are", she writes a young admirer. "I hope to see more of you some day ... We went to Pinehurst for the opening of the Carolina. And I gave 5 Exhibitions at the Fair while we were there. That being the 6th year I have worked [there] ... I missed last year. And Mr Taft wrote us that the Natives went home disappointed. I could not dance and shoot at the same time ... But I shot from a fast speaking auto and that pleased them just as well. We bought a plot of land at Pinehurst and may build there. We have not been able to find what we want here, as the soil is soft and we can often smell the smoke & I feel it in my head ... Don't go to Cal[ifornia] to [sic] soon for we both want to see your little mother, sister & your self before you go ... With all good wishes in which Mr. Butler joins. Annie Oakley Butler." Accompanying the lot is a certificate of authenticity by noted handwriting expert Charles Hamilton, dated August 18, 1996.
Provenance: Ronald J. Atlas collection.
