Masseto--Vintage 1994 L. Antinori (owc) (6) Solaia--Vintage 1994 P. Antinori (6) Tasting note Masseto 1994: Antinori's 100 Merlot answer to the right bank. Tasted twice in recent months. Very deep, opaque ruby. Quite viscous. A packed and unctious nose with saturated cherry and plummy fruit. The perfumed vanilla and cedar of new french wood add a spicy compliment to the super ripe fruit. On the palate the wine is drier and more structured than expected - quite tightly knit and youthful. This tannic structure balances a full-bodied, rich and charged red berry fruit, yet to give its all. Despite the tannins, the texture is soft and silky - quite Pomerol like. Will improve yet. Super-Tuscany at its best. T.H.
