Lot Essay

The monument at Leghorn was included by several Dutch-Italianate artists in views of this type, see for instance Johannes Lingelbach's Mediterranean seaport, dated 1659, sold in these Rooms, 3 July 1996, lot 146, or the picture by Abraham Storck, sold in these Rooms, 15 April 1994, lot 7. The marble figure of Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici of Tuscany was commissioned from Giovanni Bandini in 1595, and completed four years later. The distinctive four bronze statues of slaves were the work of Ferdinando Tacca and were installed in pairs in 1623 and 1624.
