The Flight into Egypt is a subject that Jean-Jacques Lagrenée painted on more than one occasion. This painting is possibly the Salon entry of either 1775 (no. 134) or 1779 (no. 45), with both of which its dimensions correspond (see M. Sandoz, Les Lagrenée, II, Jean-Jacques Lagrenée, Paris, 1988, p. 191, no. 38, p. 221, no. 123).
