We are grateful to Dr. Riccardo Naldi for confirming the attribution - first suggested by Professor Riccardo Lattuada, after examination in the original - on the basis of a colour photograph; Dr. Naldi dates the picture to circa 1520, when Andrea da Salerno started a prolific collaboration with his pupil Giovan Filippo Criscuolo.
Andrea Sabatini, called Andrea da Salerno, was one of the foremost artists working in Naples during the first three decades of the sixteenth century. He was greatly influenced by the work of Raphael and Leonardo, with which he would have been familiar through the Lombard Cesare da Sesto (cf. G. Previtali, ed., catalogue of the exhibition, Andrea da Salerno nel Rinascimento meridionale, Padula, Certosa di San Lorenzo, 21 June- 31 October 1986).
