Lot Essay

17-25 November 1789:"This spacious Baolee is a public bath, built of
freestone by Rajah Cheyt Singh [ruled 1770-81] near his palace at
Ramnagur on the river Ganges: it is in a mixed style of architecture in ch the Mahomedan evidently prevails".
26 November 1789: "Arrived at Juanpore at 6 a.m...", 2 December 1789:
"Spent the morning at the Atouleah Kan Musjid. Un. made a sketch of the East Gate"
Jaunpur was the capital of an independent Muslim kingdom until Emperor Akbar captured it in 1559. The Atala mosque, completed in 1408 on the
site of an old Hindu temple dedicated to Atala Devi, is, as Thomas
Danniell commented, "in a very singular, as well as ancient style of
building" with its "Minars ...united by the lofty pointed arch".
