This hitherto unpublished picture is a bozzetto for one of three pictures (the other two depicting The two saints in priar and Saint Carlo kissing the hands of Saint Filippo) on the walls of the third chapel on the left in the Church of the Gerolamini, Naples (O. Ferrari and G. Scavizzi, Luca Giordano, Naples, 1992, p. 359, no. A720 a-c, figs. 942-944). The picture of The meeting of Saint Carlo and Saint Filippo Neri is signed and dated 1704, but the bozzetto was possibly already painted in 1703, the year the pictures were commissioned by the Padri dell'Oratorio (ibid.).
Although the composition of the bozzetto and the final composition are similar, Giordano made several changes in his development of the finished work. In the large canvas, the kneeling boy presents the dish he is holding to his right directly to the saints. Next to the boy there is another kneeling youth and in the upper right he introduced several angels bestowing flowers. However the dog depicted in the bozzetto is not included in the final composition.
First mentioned by Baldinucci (1713-21), the series was already considered by the eighteenth century to be one of the 'più perfette opere' by the artist (G. Sigismondo, Descrizione della cittá di Napoli e suoi borghi, Naples, 1788-89, I, p. 187).
