The attribution was first proposed by Sir Denis Mahon, and has been confirmed on the basis of photographs by Mario di Giampaolo, who will include the picture in his forthcoming monograph on the artst.

We are grateful to Mario di Giampaolo who, on examining the present lot, has pointed out that it relates to a small painting on copper (25 x 20cm.) of the same subject by the artist in the Gemälde Galerie, Dresden (inventory no. 298; there catalogued as Italian School, sixteenth century).
