Lot Essay

The artist came from a family of painters - both her father Vincent Volò and her husband Francesco (?Ludovico) Caffi were still-life painters - and thirty flower paintings have been attributed to her, all dated between 1662-1700. She was patronized by the Medici in Florence and by the Hapsburgs in Madrid and Innsbruck. Her technique makes her work a link between the styles of earlier north Italian seventeenth-century painters such as Giovanni Benedetto Castiglioni, Bernardo Strozzi and Domenico Fetti, who also used free, fluid brushwork and impasto, and Venetian eighteenth-century painters such as Franceso Guardi and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.
