Lot Essay

1 May 1792:"Spent ... whole days at the hills ... of Bangalore where we collected several Scenes...The entrance to this temple has a very striking effect from the size and singularity of the mythological sculpture, which appears in the court before the Temple. On the right is the trident of Maha-Deva, and not far from it are two examples of the Chackra of Vishnoo". There is little doubt that the trisula of Shiva and the chakra of Vishnu intrigued Thomas Daniell for their very picturesque "singularity".
