Lot Essay

These watercolours are after a series made by G.F. Atkinson, son of James Atkinson (see lot 94), which served as the basis for the lithographic illustrations of his book of lithographs Curry and Rice, on Forty Plates, or the Ingredients of Social Life at 'Our' Station in India, London, 1860. Curry and Rice was a lighthearted work illustrating scenes of cantonment life in Bengal, focusing on a fictional but supposedly typical station.
