John Varley Jun., grandson of the celebrated landscape watercolourist, of the same name, specialized in 'oriental scenery' particularly of Japan and Egypt but also of India and Ceylon. Various exhibitions of his work were held from 1870, most notably in the Royal Academy, London. Kanpur is the largest city in Uttar Pradesh. During the 1857 mutiny the city was the headquarters of a large Indian garrison. The exhausted forces, led by Sir High Wheeler, surrendered to Nana Sahib only to be brutally massacred at Sati Chanra Ghat. Over one hundred women and children were imprisoned in a small room and, just before the relief arrived they were murdered and thrown down a well.
