Lot Essay

Archer was born in Edinburgh and studied at the Trustees Academy under Sir William Allen before moving to London in 1864. In 1884 he visited the United States and in 1886 he went to India. He returned to London in 1889. He exhibited at the Royal Society and the Royal Academy as well as the British Institution. The National Galleries in London and Edinburgh and the Art Gallery in Dundee have examples of his work.
