CAPTAIN A. H. GRAY, R.A.M.C.

A collection of watercolours of Indian birds, in two albums, titled "Birds of the Deccan", dated 17.10.1917-21.2.1919.

2 volumes, 4° (310 x 240mm.) containing 99 sheets all mounted (226 x 173mm. approx., and one smaller) of watercolours over pencilled outlines, generally showing single birds, without backgrounds, each with pencil annotations giving size, date, location, common and latin names and reference. (Lacking nos. 1, 39, 55, 85, 95, 104 and 107 according to the sequential numbering of the sheets.) Contemporary blue half morocco gilt.

A very fine series of original ornithological 'portraits', clearly drawn from life, of birds found in and around Poona. The best of them not only records a species but also captures the character of an individual: the work of Joseph Cundall springs to mind. The ordering of the drawings follows that adopted by Gould and others: Eagles and owls first working through to wildfowl and waders. (2)
