CAPT. ROBERT MELVILLE GRINDLAY (1786-1877)
Scenery, Costumes and Architecture, chiefly on the Western Side of India. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1830.
Two volumes in one, 2° (396 x 310mm). Engraved general title with hand-coloured vignette, lithographic title to vol.II on india paper, mounted (the mount slightly browned), 36 coloured aquatints on thick paper by Reeve, Fielding, Hunt, and others after Grindlay, W. Westall, D. Roberts, C. Stanfield and others. (Lacking 2 text leaves from the final part.) 19th-century half tan sheep, gilt spine, leather spine label, g.e. Provenance: Charles M. Hutt, (booklabel).
Originally issued in six parts, Ackermann published the first two parts (the first 12 plates), with Smith and Elder taking over publication of parts 3-6 from December 1826. Abbey identified 3 forms of the work: copies in parts or bound from parts, retaining pagination in the first 2 parts; copies bound as two volumes without part titles or advertisements and the text reprinted omitting pagination; and copies with one title only, dated 1830. The present copy, however, appears to be a variant with the Smith, Elder title-page dated 1830 to vol. I, retains the title-page to vol. II, and has printed pagination on pages 11 and 12. Abbey Travel 442; Colas 1334; Tooley 239 ("Next to Daniell, the most attractive colour plate book on India. One of the few books in which the colourist is mentioned, viz. J.B. Hogarth.")
