Lot Essay
Capt. O' Brien was appointed as Assistant Surveyor in Ceylon on 24 January 1845, under the supervision of Surveyor-General, F. B. Norris . Prior to that, O'Brien was in the 94th. Regiment stationed at Trichinopoly. The very nature of his employment may account for the accuracy and diversity of the views he chose to depict: townscapes and architectural views are complemented by more scenaic or even botanical prints such as The Talipate in Flower.
