With nickel-finished lever movement, 18 jewels, the eccentric silvered matt dial with Roman numerals, blued steel moon-style hands, in oval-shaped case, the reverse with an inlaid black enamel sundial with pink gold hinged gnomon and glazed circular aperture containing a compass, case hand-stamped with Cartier reference number, dial signed Cartier, movement signed European Watch Co. Inc.

The gnomon, a vertical stone obelisk, was one of the earliest instruments for measuring time and the forerunner of the sundial. The shadow projected to the ground was used for determinating the hour.
