AFTER HENRY SINGLETON (1766-1839)

Scarcity in India, by C.Knight

hand-coloured stipple engraving, over an etched base, published 1 January 1794. with margins, window mounted, framed
P. 560 x 420mm.

A fine decorative allegorical print showing two young british sailors trying to charm a beautiful young Indian girl into trading some of her fruit for trinkets.
Henry Singleton (1766-1839) was renowned for his multiple talents as historical, allegorical and genre painter: India exerted a great fascination on him, as indicated by the serie of four great canvasses he devoted to the storming of Seringapatam and the death of Tipu Sahib. The lighter, but still moralistic tone of this composition seems to provide an allegorical justification of British colonisation of India.
