Lot Essay

One can say that Portugal is literally covered with tiles. There was an intense interaction between the two tile loving countries in Europe: Portugal and the Dutch United Provincies. The Portuguese started to import large amounts of Dutch tile pictures by; e.g. Cornelis van der Kloet at De Twee Romeinen, Amsterdam, in order to compensate for the shortage of azulejo production in Portugal. They consequently were very inspired by the original Dutch examples.
