Born in Kyrbartai, Lithuania, Levitan studied at the Moscow School of Painting under A.K. Savrasov and V.D. Polenov, and, because of his poverty, was awarded a box of paints and brushes for his progress. Showing a preference for landscapes. In his school's second Students' Exhibition, his painting 'Skol'nikii Park' was bought by Pavel Tret'iakov, therefore giving him public recognition. Possibly one of the most important landscape painters of the late 19th century, his atmospheric depiction of the countryside gave a sense of continuity and national identity to his admirers.
This is an unknown smaller variant of the canvas 'Fresh Wind, the Volga' painted in 1895 now in the Tret'iakov Gallery at Moscow. In that picture the large ship is on the right of the canvas; the white steamer is closer and the church on the far bank is not depicted; see A.A. Fedorov-Davidov, Isaak Il'ich Levitan, (Moscow, 1966), vol.I p.215.
