Lot Essay

"This is a figure of a soldier, mounted on a hobby horse, and carrying an umbrella over his shoulder, which when it is set spinning, causes the soldier to run rapidly along and to use his sword vigorously as he goes."

This toy differs from that in the "1880" catalogue in that he is wearing a tricorn hat rather than an infantry helmet with a spike. It is possible that by the time the 1880 catalogued was issued, Britains had modernised the appearance of "The General", although in real life a British General in full dress would have worn a cocked hat, rather than either of the hats on the Britains toys.
