Lot Essay

With its distinctive armrest, this fauteuil is closely related to the suite of seat-furniture supplied by Henri Jacob for the Empress Maria Feodorovna for the Palace of Pavlosk. The Pavlosk suite was almost certainly designed by Jean-Demosthène Dugourc, who was engaged by the Empress at Pavlosk and indeed even designed the hangings for the walls of her appartement.
Further related chairs that share this profile of armrest were sold in Paris from the collection of Francis Guerault, 21 March 1935, lot 70.

Although the brand 'M.D.C.' is as yet unidentified, the letters 'D.C.' are often identified with the inventories of Italian Royal Palaces, denoting Dotazione de la Corona'.
