Lot Essay

This table's hermed legs, with Venus-shell badges suspended beneath acanthus-wrapped capitals, derives in part from one of Louis XIV's tables in the Cabinet des Médailles, Versailles, illustrated by Pierre Lepaute (d.1716) in his Livre de Tables of 1705. Its overall design and treatment shares much in common with that sold in the Keck collection, Sotheby's New York, 4 December 1991, lot 246.
