The brass-galleried waved rectangular top with brown leather-lined writing-slide within a lozenge and circle border, sliding back to reveal a mirrored plate, cracked, with beaded and engine-turned border, the sides each with a hinged mahogany-lined pen-tray, on square tapering legs joined by a pierced, waved three-quarter galleried concave-fronted rectangular undertier, on block feet, the lock bearing the signature 'Biennais, M Ebéniste, au Singe Violet, rue honoré, No 511'

Lot Essay

Established in 1789 in the rue Saint Honoré at the sign of the 'Singe Violet', Martin-Guillaume Biennais (1764-1843) became a marchand-mercier in 1802.
