The canted rectangular gadrooned tray-top with a central oval plaque with a spray of fruits and flowers within a ribbon-band, the spandrels with a fruiting spray and divided by a strapwork cabochon bud, within a strapwork and foliate frame with maiden's masks to the angles, the stiff-leaf border above a pierced frieze with a central sunflower-medallion flanked by scrolling foliage, on cabriole legs with an entwined dragon headed by a scallop-shell and joined by a foliate scrolling and fluted panelled X-shaped stretcher with a central vase with foliate scrolls, on a panelled concave-sided platform and scrolling feet, stamped nine times 'MONBRO'

Lot Essay

Monbro, the son of Georges Monbro, a Parisian ébéniste and dealer under the July Monarchy, opened a shop at 2, Frith Street, Soho, London in 1863. Specialising in high quality furniture of eclectic style, he exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in 1855. Related examples of his oeuvre can be seen at the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, Co. Durham.
